 | 15th Jun 2008 | SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPH 1919
(In three sections) This visit to Lord Leverhulme’s home in Thornton Hough, Wirral, on Thursday 3rd July 1919 was almost certainly a one-off occasion rather than an annual trip. All the Blue Coat students will have been boarders, the boys standing up being the ones permitted to wear long trousers. The large number of young people on this photograph is due to the fact that it was probably a joint trip with the students of HMS Indefatigable, a training ship at that time moored in the Mersey. (It was later moved to Anglesey). This would explain the fact that a sizeable proportion of the young people and one of the adults are wearing naval uniform.
The gentleman with the white beard is Arthur Mercer, by now in his 30th year of Headship. On his left, as we look at him, is Rose Phillips, the Matron.
The remarkable clarity of the photograph is due to the fact that, for many years, it lay, wrapped, in an attic and was not exposed to sunlight.
Presented 22/01/97 by Paula Ridley JP. Her great uncle, George Scott, was a teacher at the Blue Coat School at the time, although he does not appear on the photograph.
